While these hormones are vital for your body’s “fight or flight” response, significantly high levels can indicate the presence of a tumor.
Because hormone secretion can fluctuate wildly throughout the day, a single spot urine sample is often not enough. This test requires the collection of all urine produced over a full 24-hour period to provide a more accurate average of hormone production.
Why is it performed?
Your doctor may recommend this test if you have:
- Persistent or episodic high blood pressure that does not respond to standard treatment.
- Symptoms suggestive of a pheochromocytoma, such as:
- Severe headaches

⚠️ Important Patient Instructions
1. Dietary Restrictions (Crucial for Accuracy):
Certain foods and beverages can artificially increase catecholamine levels and lead to false-positive results. Avoid the following for 48 to 72 hours before and during the collection period:
- Caffeine (Coffee, Tea, Energy Drinks)
- Bananas
- Chocolate and Cocoa
- Citrus fruits (Oranges, Lemons)
- Vanilla (containing foods/beverages)
- Walnuts and Avocados
2. Medications:
Some medications (blood pressure drugs, antidepressants, decongestants) may interfere with the test. Do not stop taking any medication without consulting your doctor first, but please inform the lab of any drugs you are currently taking.
3. Collection Procedure:
- Start: On the morning of the collection day, urinate into the toilet (discard the first pass) and note the time (e.g., 8:00 AM).
- Collect: For the next 24 hours, collect all urine passed into the provided container.
- Finish: The next morning at the same time (e.g., 8:00 AM), collect the last urine sample and add it to the container.
