Description
The Anti-HBs test measures the level of antibodies to the hepatitis B surface antigen in your blood. The presence of these antibodies generally indicates recovery from a past hepatitis B infection or successful vaccination against the virus.
A positive (or “reactive”) result means you are immune to hepatitis B and cannot pass the virus to others.
Why is this test performed?
This test is primarily used to determine your immunity status to the hepatitis B virus. Your doctor may order this test to:
- Check immunity after vaccination: To ensure the hepatitis B vaccine series has provided adequate protection.
- Determine past infection: To see if you have recovered from a previous hepatitis B infection.
- Screen high-risk individuals: For healthcare workers or others who may be exposed to the virus.
What do the results mean?
- Positive (Reactive): Indicates you have successfully produced antibodies and are protected against hepatitis B. This immunity is usually lifelong.
- Negative (Non-reactive): Indicates you are not protected against hepatitis B. You may need to be vaccinated or receive a booster shot.
Patient Preparation
No special preparation, such as fasting, is typically required for this test.
