Description

Overview

The 24-Hour Urine Albumin Protein test measures the total amount of albumin and other proteins excreted in your urine over a complete 24-hour cycle. Albumin is a protein normally found in the blood; healthy kidneys keep it in the body. If albumin is found in the urine (Albuminuria), it is often the earliest sign of kidney stress or damage.

Why is this test recommended?

Doctors prescribe this test to assess kidney health more accurately than a regular spot urine test. It is crucial for:

  • Diabetic Patients: To screen for diabetic nephropathy (kidney damage caused by high blood sugar).
  • Hypertension Management: High blood pressure can damage kidney filters over time.
  • Pregnancy Monitoring: To check for Preeclampsia, a condition marked by high blood pressure and protein in urine.
  • Kidney Disease Monitoring: To track the progress of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) or check if treatments are working.

How to Collect the Sample (Important)

This test requires collecting every drop of urine passed in a 24-hour period.

  1. Day 1 Start: Empty your bladder into the toilet (do not save this). Note the time (e.g., 8:00 AM).
  2. Collection Phase: For the next 24 hours, collect all urine in the container provided by the lab. Keep the container in a cool place.
  3. Day 2 Finish: At the exact same time the next day (e.g., 8:00 AM), empty your bladder one last time and add it to the container. This completes the test.

Understanding the Results

  • Normal: Minimal protein is detected.
  • Microalbuminuria: Small amounts of albumin are found. This is an early warning sign, and kidney damage at this stage is often reversible with treatment.
  • Macroalbuminuria: Higher levels of protein are found, indicating more significant kidney stress or damage.
