Overview
The 24-Hour Microalbumin/Creatinine Ratio helps evaluate kidney function by comparing two substances in your urine over a full day:
- Microalbumin: Tiny amounts of albumin (protein). Healthy kidneys filter this out, so finding it in urine is an early sign of strain.
- Creatinine: A waste product from muscle breakdown that is normally removed by the kidneys at a steady rate.
Comparing these two helps correct for urine concentration (how much water you drank), providing the most accurate picture of how much protein your kidneys are actually leaking.
Why is this test recommended?
This is the “Gold Standard” for early detection of kidney issues (Nephropathy). It is routinely prescribed for:
- Diabetic Patients: To catch kidney damage years before standard tests can detect it.
- Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): To monitor if blood pressure is affecting kidney filters.
- Early Intervention: Detecting “Microalbuminuria” (trace amounts of protein) allows doctors to start treatments that can stop or reverse kidney damage.
How to Collect the Sample (Crucial Step)
Accurate results depend on a strict 24-hour collection cycle:
- Day 1 Start: Wake up and empty your bladder into the toilet (do not keep this). Note the time (e.g., 7:00 AM).
- Collection: For the next 24 hours, collect every drop of urine in the container provided by the lab. Keep the container cool.
- Day 2 Finish: At the exact same time the next morning (e.g., 7:00 AM), empty your bladder one last time and add it to the container. The test is now complete.
Understanding the Results
- Normal: The ratio is low, indicating healthy kidney filtration.
- Microalbuminuria: Moderate elevation. This is the “warning zone” where treatment is most effective to prevent permanent damage.
- Macroalbuminuria: Higher elevation, indicating established kidney damage or diabetic nephropathy.
Test Details
- Sample Type: 24-Hour Urine
- Preparation: No fasting required. Stay hydrated as usual during the collection period unless told otherwise.
- Turnaround Time: Reports are typically available within 24 hours of submission.
