Description

The 5-Alpha DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) test measures the level of a highly potent male sex hormone in the blood. It is most commonly used to investigate the root causes of pattern hair loss (alopecia) in both men and women, evaluate prostate enlargement, and assess other hormonal imbalances.

Overview: Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is an androgen—a hormone that stimulates the development of male characteristics. It is created when an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase converts standard testosterone into DHT. Because DHT is significantly more potent than testosterone, it has a profound impact on specific areas of the body, most notably the skin, hair follicles, and the prostate gland.

Clinical Significance:

  • Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia): High levels of DHT are widely recognized as a primary culprit in male and female pattern baldness. The hormone binds to receptors in the scalp, shrinking hair follicles and shortening the hair growth cycle.

  • Prostate Health: DHT actively stimulates the growth of prostate tissue. Measuring DHT levels helps doctors evaluate conditions like Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and monitor the effectiveness of medications designed to block DHT production (such as finasteride or dutasteride).

  • Hormonal Evaluations: In women, elevated DHT can be associated with hyperandrogenism, contributing to conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), excessive facial/body hair growth (hirsutism), and adult acne. In males, it can be used to evaluate delayed puberty or enzyme deficiencies.

Sample Requirements:

  • Specimen: Serum (Blood).

  • Container: Gold Top (SST) or Red Top Tube.

  • Preparation: No fasting is strictly required. However, because hormone levels can fluctuate throughout the day, doctors often recommend having the blood drawn in the morning. Please consult your physician’s specific instructions.
