The 5-Alpha DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) test measures the level of a highly potent male sex hormone in the blood. It is most commonly used to investigate the root causes of pattern hair loss (alopecia) in both men and women, evaluate prostate enlargement, and assess other hormonal imbalances.
Overview: Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is an androgen—a hormone that stimulates the development of male characteristics. It is created when an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase converts standard testosterone into DHT. Because DHT is significantly more potent than testosterone, it has a profound impact on specific areas of the body, most notably the skin, hair follicles, and the prostate gland.
