Description

Overview: Healthy kidneys filter waste from the blood but keep important proteins like albumin inside the body. When the kidneys are stressed or damaged, they start to leak small amounts of albumin into the urine. This condition is called Microalbuminuria.

This test analyzes a single “spot” urine sample to detect these trace amounts of albumin. It is significantly more sensitive than a standard urine dipstick test.

Clinical Significance:

  • Diabetic Nephropathy: For patients with diabetes, this is the most critical routine test. Detecting albumin leakage early allows for treatment that can stop or reverse kidney damage.

  • Hypertension Monitoring: High blood pressure damages kidney filters over time; this test monitors that impact.

  • Early CKD Detection: It is the primary screen for early-stage Chronic Kidney Disease.

When is this test recommended?

  • Annually for all Type 2 Diabetics (starting at diagnosis) and Type 1 Diabetics (5 years post-diagnosis).

  • Regularly for patients with high blood pressure.

  • If you have a family history of kidney failure.

Sample Requirements:

  • Specimen: Random Urine Sample (Spot Urine).

  • Container: Sterile Urine Container (Plastic cup with screw cap).

  • Preparation:

    • Mid-Stream: It is best to collect the “mid-stream” urine (pass a little urine into the toilet first, then collect the sample) to avoid contamination.

    • Avoid Exercise: Avoid vigorous exercise 24 hours before the test, as it can cause temporary protein leakage.

    • No fasting is required.
