Description

Overview

The Anti-Insulin Antibodies (IAA) test measures the presence of antibodies in the blood that target insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas (or injected as medication) that helps regulate blood sugar. In autoimmune conditions like Type 1 Diabetes, the body’s immune system mistakenly identifies insulin as a threat and creates antibodies to attack it.

Why is this test recommended?

  • Diagnosing Type 1 Diabetes: It is one of the key autoantibody markers used to confirm Type 1 Diabetes, especially in children and young adults (LADA).
  • Investigating Insulin Resistance: In patients already taking insulin injections, the body may sometimes develop antibodies against the medication, making the treatment less effective. This test helps identify if that is the cause of unstable blood sugar levels.
  • Unexplained Hypoglycemia: It is used to investigate causes of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in people who are not taking insulin.

Understanding the Results

  • Negative: Normal result. No significant antibodies found.
  • Positive: Indicates an autoimmune response (Type 1 Diabetes) or, in diabetic patients, the presence of antibodies neutralizing the injected insulin.

Test Details

  • Sample Type: Blood (Serum)
  • Preparation: Overnight fasting (8–10 hours) is generally preferred to ensure the clearest sample quality, though not always strictly required. Consult your doctor for specific instructions.
  • Turnaround Time: Reports are typically available within 3–4 days as this is a specialized test.
