The AMH Test is the gold standard for assessing a woman’s “ovarian reserve” (egg count). Unlike other fertility hormones, AMH levels remain stable throughout the menstrual cycle, making it a convenient and reliable marker for evaluating fertility potential, predicting menopause timing, and diagnosing Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

Description

Overview: Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) is a hormone produced by the granulosa cells in the small developing egg sacs (follicles) within the ovaries. Because the amount of AMH in the blood is directly proportional to the number of developing follicles, measuring it gives doctors a good estimate of the remaining egg supply, or “ovarian reserve.”

Clinical Significance:

  • Fertility Assessment: This is the primary test to check a woman’s ability to produce eggs that can be fertilized. Low levels indicate a diminished ovarian reserve (fewer eggs remaining), while normal levels suggest a good reserve.

  • PCOS Diagnosis: Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) often have an unusually high number of follicles, leading to elevated AMH levels. This test helps support a PCOS diagnosis.

  • IVF Planning: For women undergoing IVF, AMH levels help doctors predict how the ovaries will respond to fertility drugs and determine the appropriate dosage.

  • Menopause Prediction: Very low or undetectable levels of AMH can indicate that menopause is approaching.

When is this test recommended?

  • For women having difficulty conceiving or considering fertility treatments (IVF/freezing eggs).

  • To evaluate symptoms of PCOS (irregular periods, acne, excessive hair growth).

  • To monitor ovarian health in women who have had chemotherapy or ovarian surgery.

  • Timing Advantage: Unlike FSH or LH tests, which must be done on specific days of the menstrual cycle, the AMH test can be performed on any day of the month.
