Description

Overview: When you are infected with Group A Streptococcus bacteria, your body produces antibodies to fight the bacteria’s toxins. One of these toxins is called streptolysin O. The ASO Titre test measures the amount (titre) of these specific antibodies in your blood. A high or rising level indicates a recent or ongoing immune response to a strep infection.

Clinical Significance: This test is not typically used to diagnose an active, acute case of strep throat (a rapid strep test or throat culture is better for that). Instead, it is crucial for diagnosing serious complications that can develop weeks or months later, such as:

  • Rheumatic Fever: An inflammatory disease that can affect the heart, joints, skin, and brain.

  • Post-Streptococcal Glomerulonephritis: A kidney disorder that can cause inflammation and damage to the kidneys

When is this test recommended?

  • When a patient presents with symptoms of rheumatic fever (e.g., joint pain, fever, rash) or kidney problems (e.g., blood in urine, swelling) weeks after a sore throat or skin infection.

  • To confirm a past strep infection when the initial illness was not diagnosed or treated.

  • Doctors often order this test twice, about two weeks apart, to see if the antibody levels are rising (indicating a recent infection) or falling.

Sample Requirements:

  • Specimen: Serum.

  • Container: Gold Top (SST) or Red Top Tube.

  • Preparation: No fasting is typically required.
