Description
Overview: Chlamydia trachomatis is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs). While an active infection is usually detected via a urine test or swab (PCR), this blood test looks for IgG antibodies, which the body produces after an infection has occurred.
Clinical Significance:
-
Past Exposure vs. Active Infection: IgG antibodies can persist in the blood for years. A positive result indicates that the patient has been infected with Chlamydia at some point in their life, even if the infection was treated or had no symptoms.
-
Fertility & Tubal Health: This test is a crucial tool for fertility specialists. A positive IgG result suggests a higher risk of Tubal Factor Infertility (blocked or damaged fallopian tubes) caused by a past Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) episode.
-
Ectopic Pregnancy Risk: Past chlamydia infections increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy; this test helps assess that risk history.
When is this test recommended?
-
As part of a comprehensive Fertility Check for women having trouble conceiving.
-
To screen for “silent” past infections that may have caused internal scarring.
-
Note: To diagnose a current, active infection requiring antibiotic treatment, a PCR Swab or Urine test is usually preferred over this blood test.
Sample Requirements:
-
Specimen: Serum.
-
Container: Gold Top (SST) or Red Top Tube.
-
Preparation: No fasting required.
