Description
The Semen Analysis & Culture Panel is a dual-purpose test essential for male reproductive health. It combines a comprehensive analysis of sperm health (fertility markers) with a microbial culture to detect bacterial infections in the reproductive tract that could impair sperm quality.
Overview: This panel is used primarily in the investigation of male infertility and for diagnosing reproductive tract infections. By combining two tests on a single sample, it provides a holistic view of sperm quality and potential microbial causes for abnormalities.
What is measured:
1. Semen Analysis (Fertility Markers): This portion physically evaluates the seminal fluid and the sperm. Key parameters measured include:
-
Sperm Count (Concentration): The number of sperm per milliliter of semen.
-
Sperm Motility: The percentage of sperm that are moving normally (swimming).
-
Sperm Morphology: The percentage of sperm that have a normal shape and structure.
-
Semen Volume & pH: The total amount of ejaculate and its acidity/alkalinity.
2. Semen Culture (Infection Markers): This portion screens the seminal fluid for pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria or yeast). Infections in the prostate (prostatitis), urethra, or epididymis can introduce harmful bacteria into the semen.
-
Identification: If bacteria are detected, they are cultured and identified (e.g., E. coli, Klebsiella, or Enterococcus).
-
Sensitivity Testing: If necessary, an antibiotic sensitivity test can be performed on the identified bacteria to guide effective treatment.
Clinical Significance:
-
Fertility Assessment: Provides critical data needed to diagnose the cause of male factor infertility.
-
Infection Detection: Identifies asymptomatic infections that can damage sperm DNA, reduce count and motility, or cause blockage in the reproductive tract.
-
Guiding Treatment: Abnormal analysis results combined with a positive culture allow for targeted antibiotic therapy to clear the infection, which often resolves sperm quality issues.
When is this test recommended?
-
Infertility Investigation: Couples struggling to conceive for over a year (or six months for women over 35).
-
Suspected Infection: Symptoms like pelvic pain, painful ejaculation, abnormal urine tests, or discomfort in the genital area.
-
Abnormal Analysis: If a previous semen analysis showed low parameters with no clear cause.
Sample Requirements:
-
Specimen: Ejaculate (Seminal Fluid).
-
Container: Standard, sterile wide-mouth specimen collection cup (must be sterile for the culture portion).
-
Preparation & abstinence: Strict abstinence from any sexual activity (intercourse or masturbation) for 2 to 7 days prior to collection is mandatory.
-
Crucial Handling: The sample must be delivered to the laboratory within 30 to 60 minutes of collection and kept at body temperature during transport. Extended delays or extreme temperatures significantly degrade sperm motility, making accurate analysis impossible.
