Description

The Male Hormonal Profile is a comprehensive blood test panel that evaluates the key hormones regulating male reproductive health, vitality, and sexual function. It is essential for diagnosing the root causes of low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, infertility, fatigue, and muscle loss.

Overview: Male reproductive health and vitality depend on a delicate balance of hormones communicating between the brain (the pituitary gland) and the testicles. This panel measures the five most critical hormones in this communication loop to pinpoint exactly where an imbalance might be occurring.

What is measured (The Panel):

  1. FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone): Produced by the brain, FSH directs the testicles to produce sperm. High or low levels can indicate primary testicular failure or brain signaling issues.

  2. LH (Luteinizing Hormone): Also produced by the brain, LH signals the testicles to produce testosterone.

  3. Prolactin: A hormone produced by the pituitary gland. Abnormally high levels in men can suppress FSH and LH production, directly causing low testosterone, erectile dysfunction, and infertility.

  4. Total Testosterone: Measures the total amount of testosterone in the blood, including both the active hormone and the hormone bound to proteins (which the body cannot easily use).

  5. Free Testosterone: Measures only the “active” or unbound testosterone circulating in the blood that is immediately available for the body’s tissues to use. This is often a more accurate reflection of a man’s clinical testosterone status than the total level alone.

Clinical Significance:

  • Diagnosing Hypogonadism (Low T): Helps determine if low testosterone is caused by a problem in the testicles themselves (primary hypogonadism) or a problem in the brain’s signaling (secondary hypogonadism).

  • Infertility Investigations: Identifies hormonal roadblocks to healthy sperm production.

  • Vitality & Wellness: Investigates the root cause of symptoms like chronic fatigue, unexplained loss of muscle mass, weight gain, depression, and low libido.

  • Monitoring Treatment: Used to establish a baseline and monitor the effectiveness and safety of Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT).

When is this test recommended?

  • Symptoms of Low T: Decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, mood changes, or decreased energy.

  • Fertility Issues: Couples experiencing difficulty conceiving.

  • Routine Wellness: Often recommended for men over 40 as part of a comprehensive proactive health check.

Sample Requirements:

  • Specimen: Serum (Blood).

  • Container: Gold Top (SST) or Red Top Tube.

  • Preparation: Strict Morning Draw Required. Testosterone levels peak in the early morning and decline throughout the day. For accurate results, blood must be drawn between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM. Fasting for 8-12 hours beforehand is also highly recommended to prevent interference with certain hormone measurements.
