Description
Overview: Progesterone is a steroid hormone produced by the ovaries (specifically the corpus luteum) after ovulation, and later by the placenta during pregnancy. Its main role is to thicken the lining of the uterus (endometrium) to prepare it for a fertilized egg.
Clinical Significance:
-
Ovulation Confirmation: Progesterone levels peak about 7 days after ovulation. A high level on “Day 21” of a standard cycle confirms that an egg was released.
-
Pregnancy Support: In early pregnancy, consistent progesterone levels are vital to prevent the uterus from shedding its lining (miscarriage).
-
Menstrual Irregularities: Low levels can contribute to abnormal bleeding, short cycles, or spotting.
When is this test recommended?
-
Infertility Workup: To determine if a woman is ovulating normally.
-
Pregnancy Monitoring: To check the health of an early pregnancy, especially in women with a history of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.
-
Abnormal Bleeding: To investigate the cause of irregular menstrual periods
- Timing Note: For ovulation tracking, this test is typically performed on Day 21 of a 28-day cycle
Sample Requirements:
-
Specimen: Serum
- Container: Gold Top (SST) or Red Top Tube
- Preparation: No fasting is required, but it is crucial to inform the lab of the date of your last menstrual period (LMP) so results can be interpreted correctly.
