Description
This diagnostic test, Absolute Eosinophil Count Blood, is offered by Kashmir Online Lab in the HAEMATOLOGY department. It helps in assessing relevant health parameters. For detailed information or booking, visit our website or contact us.
Overview: Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell that plays a crucial role in the body’s immune response, particularly in fighting off parasitic infections and triggering allergic inflammation. The AEC test calculates the actual number of these cells per microliter of blood, providing a more precise assessment than the percentage given in a standard blood count.
Clinical Significance:
-
Eosinophilia (High Count): Elevated levels are most commonly caused by allergic conditions (asthma, hay fever, eczema), drug reactions, or parasitic infections (like worms). In rarer cases, very high levels can indicate autoimmune disorders or certain blood disorders.
-
Eosinopenia (Low Count): Lower than normal levels can be seen during the early stages of severe bacterial infections, in response to stress, or due to the use of corticosteroid medications.
When is this test recommended?
-
To investigate symptoms of chronic allergies, such as unexplained skin rashes, itching, or respiratory issues.
-
To monitor the severity and control of asthma.
-
To screen for parasitic infections, especially in patients with recent travel history.
-
To monitor patients having a suspected allergic reaction to medication.
Sample Requirements:
-
Specimen: Whole Blood.
-
Container: Lavender Top Tube (EDTA).
-
Preparation: No fasting is usually required. However, certain medications (like steroids or antibiotics) can affect results, so patients should inform the phlebotomist of what they are taking.
